The need for an ambulance service in the Marseilles area was brought about due to the local
group of concerned citizens of the surrounding areas worked together to insure that the
citizens in the area not only had an ambulance service, but a fully trained emergency medical
staff to meet the needs of a growing community. The City of Marseilles and Manlius and
Rutland Township donated a per capita amount as a one time start up donation for the
ambulance service.
MAAS officially went into active service November 21, 1974 at 12:01 a.m. The first
ambulance to be put into service was an old Cadillac style ambulance. The service had 58
active members, 24 of which were trained to the level of EMT. In 1975 Marseilles added a
second ambulance to the fleet and has been growing ever since.
In September of 2004 MAAS upgraded from a BLS (Basic Life Support) service to an ILS
( Intermediate Life Support) service. With this upgrade in our service, we are able to
administer a higher level of care to better stabilize the patient prior to arrival at the hospital.
In December of 2009 MAAS upgraded from ILS to ALS(Advanced Life Support). With
this upgrade in our service we are able to treat life threatening emergencies in hope for a
better out come for our patients.
Today MAAS is supported solely by money from emergency calls transfers and donations.
We celebrated our 35th anniversary in November of 2009. Through the many years of
dedicated service of hundreds of volunteers, this service continued to grow.
In April 2005, Marseilles Ambulance went full-time. MAAS provides Emergency Medical
Services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. MAAS provides Advanced Life Support under
the guidance of the Ottawa Regional Hospital EMS System.
MAAS responds to emergencies with a fleet of 4 ALS Ambulances loaded with state of the
art, top of the line equipment. MAAS is staffed 24/7 by licensed EMT's. Every day there is
at minimum of 1 Paramedic and 1 EMT at the station. MAAS currently has 35 active
members consisting of 18 EMT-Basic's, 6 EMT-I, 6 EMT-P, 1 Pre-Hospital Registered
Nurse, and 1 First Responder. MAAS responded to over 750 911 calls, along with over
980 non-emergency transfers in 2009.
Our apparatus are stocked with some of today's most advanced technology. We have the
latest in cardiac monitoring capability. We can instantaneously take a 12 Lead EKG of the
heart and via the Internet transmit this to Ottawa Regional Hospital. From this image that
they receive at the hospital they can determine the best course of action for chest pain
patients that will soon arrive. In addition, we provide C.P.A.P, or continuous positive
airway pressure, to patients with respiratory distress, which decreases the need for MAAS
to perform endotracheal intubation's in the field. This in turn provides for a quicker recovery
time for our patients. Also we now have a capability to do Intraosseus needle insertion on
adults and pediatric patients with the technology of the EZ IO drill. We carry a wide variety
of Emergency care drugs that help with the out come of our patients. Patient care and
outcome are the highest priority to MAAS.
As our area expands so will our training and knowledge to offer the best service available to
the community and anyone who may need our service in there time of need.
